About the opportunity

We are looking for a Biological Cryo Electron Microscopist who will manage and maintain the cryo electron microscopes and the cryo specimen preparation laboratories at Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis (SMM).

You will provide expert technical support to researchers, focusing primarily on users' biological microscopy and microanalysis needs, including analysis and interpretation of images and data. In this role, you will ensure that the laboratories are properly maintained, all equipment is functioning correctly, and that preventative work/maintenance protocols are in place for scientific equipment.

You will also ensure that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the work area are met and are aligned to the University's WHS policy.

About you

  • experience and expertise in cryo electron microscopy as well as correlation of these techniques and associated cryogenic sample preparation and data analysis
  • skills in advanced electron microscopy techniques including correlated electron microscopy imaging in addition to one or more of the following advanced electron microscopy techniques: single-particle cryo TEM, 3-D TEM, cryo-SEM, serial EM, electron tomography, focussed ion beam milling (FIB), manual and/or automated vitrification and other related freezing approaches
  • an ability to ascertain methodological developments and the needs of users across cryo/bio electron microscopy in addition to experience in the supervision, training and mentoring of users
  • sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment including experience in working within PC2 laboratories and the safe use of hazardous substances and cryogens.
