Yanchep Secondary College (SC) are seeking to establish a pool of Design and Technology Assistants for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year up to the end of Term 1, 2022.

As a Design and Technology Assistant, you will be responsible for the preparation of the classroom and workshop to enable the classroom teacher to instruct students effectively, prepare specialised equipment and materials and provide operational advice for design and technology classes. You will design and construct teaching aids to meet standards that support teaching and curriculum requirements. Suitable applicants will maintain and assess technical equipment, carry out repairs and maintain the design and technology equipment, complete stock takes and order supplies.

To be successful in this role, you should have knowledge and experience in technical industrial equipment within a design and technology class. In addition, applicants will ideally have the knowledge and understanding of the Western Australian Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and knowledge of Design and Technology subjects in secondary school. This position allows applicants to work alongside the design and technology department as the school continues to grow and expand.

Suitable applicants should have good written, verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all stakeholders. You will have good organisational and time management along with the understanding of working with wood and metalwork machinery and resource supplies management.

Yanchep SC opened in 2018 in a brand-new purpose-built school, designed to meet the needs of our students by providing our young people with a high quality, comprehensive education. The school has recently had a new Performing Arts building built and a refurbishment of teaching areas including a purpose-built hospitality teaching area and cafe. We have programs for students from Year 7 to 12. Our school has specialist teachers, a challenging curriculum that inspires excellence, and many options and pathways for students to succeed, including university, further training or employment.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge, skills and experience in operating technical/industrial equipment within a design and technology workshop/class or similar environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Western Australian Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and its coverage in industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of Design and Technology subjects relevant to secondary schools.
  • Good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to deal effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Organisational and time management skills and ability to work independently.

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; 
  • Hold a Certificate III in Work Health and Safety or equivalent qualification or experience; and
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.


Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
