Project/program Manager - Curtin Institute For Radio Astronomy

Curtin University - Perth, WA

Education, Childcare & Training
Source: uWorkin

Job reference: 676591

The position is based at the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA; https://astronomy.curtin.edu.au/), which is located in Perth, Western Australia. CIRA is a multi-disciplinary research institute working to reveal the mysteries of our universe. Astrophysicists work side by side with engineers and computer scientists to develop and exploit world-leading instrumentation, tools and techniques designed to probe the farthest reaches of space. Our mission is to improve our understanding of the universe and our place in it. In pursuing its goals, CIRA strives to translate research outcomes into impacts with benefits outside of radio astronomy research.

CIRA forms one half of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR; https://icrar.org/), a Joint Venture with The University of Western Australia and the WA State Government. CIRA also maintains strong collaborations with numerous national and international organisations that share our mission, and makes extensive use of the nearby Pawsey Supercomputing Centre (https://pawsey.org.au/) and industry-based research infrastructure providers.

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA; http://skatelescope.org/) is an international ‘mega-science’ project to build and operate the world’s largest radio-telescopes. The SKA will explore space and time in a way that has never been possible, and help to unlock fundamental secrets of the universe. As lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA; http://mwatelescope.org/)—an operational telescope and officially-designated precursor to the SKA operating on the future site of the SKA in Australia; and a key contributor to the design and verification of the low frequency aperture array that will form half the international Square Kilometre Array, CIRA is at the forefront of low frequency radio astronomy research. Join us, and help us to advance human understanding of the universe we all inhabit.

Your new role

As the international Square Kilometre Array Project finalises its designs and transitions to procurement and construction activity, CIRA needs you to manage the critical relationships, interfaces and agreements that influence its participation in the SKA.

You will maintain strong, collaborative and effective relationships with the—highly diverse and distributed—network of stakeholders that effect CIRA’s role in SKA. In particular, you will work closely with the SKA Organisation—the inter-governmental organisation, based at the Jodrell Bank Observatory outside of Manchester, UK, that leads the global collaboration to deliver the SKA; and the CSIRO—who will host and operate the SKA in Australia. You will help to ensure that CIRA’s contributions to SKA are relevant, timely and impactful. You will work with the Leadership and Management groups at CIRA to ensure that its talented team of researchers and engineers have the guidance, time and resources they need to deliver on CIRA’s commitments in SKA.

You will bring to the role

To succeed in this role, you will need to be a proactive professional with experience in technical project management and related business acumen. You will need to be comfortable working to achieve an intent without a prescription. You will need to operate within a dynamic environment, managing priorities in consultation with internal and external stakeholders. You will need excellent communication skills and be able to formulate appropriate engagement strategies for a diverse network of stakeholders. You will need to lead and manage the development and maintenance of high quality technical, project and contract related documentation.

Formal qualifications/certifications in a relevant discipline(s)—including project management, systems engineering, engineering management, or contract management—are desirable, but not essential. If you have demonstrable and verifiable skills and experience, that you think equip you for the role, we encourage you to apply.
