JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Exciting strategic research alliance
  • Academic leadership opportunity
  • Industry partnership

Curtin University is ranked in the top one per cent of universities worldwide, 17th in the world for universities less than 50 years old and has a five-star excellence rating in the QS stars rating 2020. The University partners with industry, business and government to enhance the quality of its teaching and research.

An exciting strategic research alliance has been formed between Curtin University and Optus Enterprise. This partnership will leverage synergies between Curtin's excellent research, teaching and learning capabilities, and Optus' market-leading technology and infrastructure capabilities to focus on the impact of artificial intelligence and 5G on regional telecommunications, higher education and the urban environment.

A cornerstone of this alliance is the appointment of an Optus Chair in Artificial Intelligence. The Chair will lead the Centre with a team of three Optus Research Fellows and HDR students, focusing on applied artificial intelligence technologies in the key areas. The Chair will be pivotal in identifying and attracting strong talent to the Centre and University.

The purpose of this leadership role is to build algorithms, models and large scale systems that solve problems including but not limited to telco management, transportation, urban planning, real time crowd management, retail intelligence, and 5G using telco and other data sources. This role will work closely with a range of disciplines across the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, the Curtin Institute of Computation, the Cisco Curtin Centre for Networking as well as more broadly across the University and externally into industry and government.

The Optus Chair in Artificial Intelligence is anticipated to be a prominent appointment of academic leadership at the level of Professor (Level E) or Associate Professor (Level D) and is full time for three years, with an underlying continuing role within the School. Candidates must have a strong research track record, prior experience working with industry partners, demonstrated leadership of integrated research activity and the ability to build and facilitate growth of the alliance.
