College of Medicine and Public Health

The Dean will provide leadership in promoting and enhancing the profile of the Rural and Remote Health discipline locally, nationally and internationally and in fostering excellence in research, teaching, program delivery, and student services across the discipline.

The Dean will lead implementation of initiatives aligned with the vision for Rural and Remote Health and the strategic priorities of the College and University. The Dean will work collaboratively with the Vice-President and Executive Dean, other Deans, Professoriate, research and education leaders, academic and professional staff to ensure that the Rural and Remote Health vision and aligned objectives are achieved.

As a member of the College Executive Team, this position will contribute to the strategic leadership and management of the entire College, and to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the College. The Dean will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing success of the Rural Remote programs including pursuing relevant growth opportunities.

In addition, the Dean, Rural and Remote will work closely with:

  • Deputy Dean, Rural and Remote
  • Academic Leads and Managers in the NT and SA
  • The Poche Leadership to enhance Aboriginal health and capacity development
  • Community and health partners across NT and SA
  • All staff across Rural and Remote.
  • The Executive Leadership of College of Medicine and Public Health.
  • University, College, and Portfolio Administration staff.
The position may be situated at any campus across the Rural and Remote footprint, dependent on the successful applicant.

Key Position Responsibilities
  • Be accountable for the achievement and growth of Rural and Remote health initiatives as academic Head of the discipline of Rural and Remote Health.
  • Provide academic leadership in the discipline of Rural and Remote Health in the NT and SA in research and education and the delivery of the outcomes required to achieve the vision for rural and remote health described in the College’s Strategic Plan and the ambition described in the University’s 2025 Agenda.
  • Contribute to the strategic leadership and management of the College as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Develop and maintain productive partnerships, alliances & relationships with Government, healthcare institutions, Indigenous communities, and other universities that will enhance educational and research objectives and expand relevant opportunities for the discipline of Rural and Remote Health.
  • Establish and develop culture and values aligned with those of the University through modelling excellence in leadership behaviours and effective discipline leadership, including resource planning, developing and managing performance, recognition, and professional development for staff.
  • Oversee and be accountable for the budget of the discipline including revenue generation and allocation, and ensuring required financial outcomes.
  • Be accountable for the discipline’s internal and external engagement and impact, including representing the discipline and the University with external stakeholders and initiating and leading collaborative efforts across the discipline within the College and in partnership with other Colleges for mutually-beneficial research and educational outcomes.
  • Embed an effective work and study climate by promoting consultation and interaction within the discipline, across the College and with other University Colleges, modelling and promoting collegial working relationships amongst staff and students, and promoting the health and wellbeing of staff and students.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Vice President and Executive Dean.
Key Position Capabilities
  • PhD or equivalent level qualification.
  • Evidence of national standing in the discipline of rural/remote health. An international standing would be desirable.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of current Government rural and remote workforce and Indigenous health policies and priorities, emerging issues, and experience in working effectively with Indigenous peoples
  • Evidence of an outstanding level of achievement in research with a record of high calibre research outputs and significant record of success in winning nationally competitive research grants and/or contracts.
  • Evidence of an outstanding and distinguished record of achievement in education and in the development of strategic alliances and partnerships in delivering successful educational outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully leading strategic initiatives and the ability to contribute constructively to the overall strategic performance and positioning of a discipline / College as part of a senior leadership team.
  • Evidence of outstanding collaborative leadership resulting in a high performing culture in education and research.
  • Proven ability to translate strategic objectives and vision into deliverables that result in high performance outcomes in a demanding and complex global higher education environment.
  • Highly developed ability to develop capacity and coach others in the pursuit of all areas of academic endeavour.
  • Highly developed ability and skills in initiating and successfully leading complex cultural and academic change.
  • Outstanding negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to constructively challenge and engage others.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills including the ability to consult, network and build productive relationships within the organisation and externally including indigenous peoples.
  • Proven ability to plan and manage the financial, physical and human resources of a large organisational unit.
