TAFE Counsellor

This is an exciting opportunity to be part the TAFE NSW Student Services team.

Based in Strathfield, the Counsellor is responsible for providing educational and vocational counselling for intending and enrolled students, and also personal counselling for enrolled students within TAFE NSW. This is a full-time temporary role until 30 June 2021.

Reporting to the Senior Counsellor, this position will:
  • Provide individual counselling and group-work in educational counselling such as: course choice and planning; skills and ability assessment; assessment of factors hindering successful course completion; study difficulties
  • Provide vocational (Career) counselling such as: career choice / planning; retraining, career development; employment advice / prospects
  • Provide personal counselling in matters affecting educational progress
  • Use of educational, vocational, and psychological tests where appropriate
  • Contact and liaise with a wider network of appropriate educational and other community agencies and resources for purposes of information and referrals.
If you have…. * Recognised degree with appropriate major in Psychology in an APAC accredited course OR Eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
  • Two years relevant, recent counselling experience, in personal counselling AND vocational and/or educational counselling OR post graduate qualifications in related counselling areas.
  • Knowledge of NSW secondary and post-secondary education/training systems.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, liaison and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of issues affecting minority groups.
  • Sound organisational skills and the ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Familiar with current developments in vocational training issues.
  • Familiar with legislative requirements which impact on counselling practice
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department’s Aboriginal education policies.
  • Commitment to Work Health and Safety, ecological sustainability and ethical practice.
