The School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) is the largest School within UNSW Medicine, and one of the largest at UNSW. The School is based largely within the Wallace Wurth (Medicine) and Biosciences Buildings on the Kensington campus, but also includes the UNSW Lifestyle Clinic on High Street, Randwick. Website

UNSW’s Education Focussed roles (EF) enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialism will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.

The Opportunity

  • Continuing, Part-time (0.8 FTE) position
  • Level C: $132K - $152K (+17% Superannuation & leave loading)
  • Based at Kensington Campus, Sydney.


The appointee will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate programs of Medicine and Science offered at UNSW and will contribute to coordination of teaching of the Pathology curriculum in the Medicine program. The appointee will be expected to engage in scholarly teaching and to exhibit educational leadership.

The School has major research strengths of inflammation and infectious diseases, neuroscience, metabolic disease, cancer, and educational research. The School also leads important statewide and national initiatives in both pathology education and tissue biobanking. Ideally an appointee would bring skills that complement these areas or have strengths in related areas. Please review the attached position description for full details. Key Skills And Experience
  • Medical degree and specialist qualification in Anatomical Pathology with relevant professional expertise. A higher degree in biomedical science would be an advantage.
  • Relevant practical (hospital) and teaching (university) experience in basic or diagnostic pathology.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to teach and lead undergraduate courses in the discipline area. Prior experience in an education focused role is essential.
  • Capacity to provide expertise and academic leadership within the discipline of Pathology or a relevant sub-disciplinary area.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Actively stays up to date with discipline knowledge and development.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning.
  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the profession and industry and attract funding for learning and teaching initiatives.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
