West Leederville Primary School (PS) is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Principal to lead their team, a supportive leader who promotes positive relationships between students, staff, parents and the local community. West Leederville PS has a well-established culture of distributed leadership which creates shared ownership of school improvement strategies, and provides development opportunity and support to aspirants.

The successful applicant will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students and staff. They will be responsible for establishing systems to foster academic, social and emotional development for students, as well as engaging a diverse school community in the educational programs of the school. They will possess a commitment to continuous school improvement and evidence-based classroom practice, and aim to build partnerships with external agencies and services to benefit school programs.

The successful applicant will also be innovative and creative in the leadership of systems and structures to deliver educational excellence through a safe, respectful and stimulating environment that inspires our students to unlock and fulfil their learning potential. They will lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students, through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and other stakeholders. In addition to this, they will ensure compliance and accountability for the overall management and development of the school within Government and Departmental policies and guidelines.

The school values collaborative planning in year level teams to develop consistent, quality learning programs and engage in rigorous analysis of student data. The successful applicant should be a team player with a commitment to whole school approaches, well-considered resource allocation, strategic professional learning and performance improvement processes.

West Leederville PS is located in the Perth suburb of West Leederville, between Lake Monger and the City of Subiaco. The enrolment of over 570 students is drawn from varied backgrounds and cultures. A significant feature of the school's character is as a place of interaction for the community including local musicians, sporting and fitness groups, language and artists.

West Leederville PS has consistently increased in student population over the past 10 years whilst being located on one of the smallest school footprints in education. The ability to be creative with resourcing, timetabling, school and local facilities is essential.

The school recognises the importance of the local community and values a collaborative partnership in the delivery of education. Students, staff, and parents participate in a wide range of programs to support, enhance and develop community relations. West Leederville enjoys a particularly strong parent and community involvement through the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) and the School Board.

The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the three leadership requirements and five professional practices particular to the role of a principal identified by the Australian Professional Standard for Principals:

  4. Leading the management of the school
  5. Engaging and working with the community

All appointees to Principal positions longer than 6 months in duration who have not completed 6 months or more in a WA public school principal role prior to January 2015 will be required to satisfactorily complete all Principal Eligibility Modules. The Principal Eligibility Modules which are completed online must be completed within 6 months of commencement in a principal role.


Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.


Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
