The Opportunity

Telethon Kids Institute is a health and medical research institute committed to discovering new and effective ways to enhance children's health and wellbeing. Within the Institute's broad research capacity sits the Telethon Kids Cancer Centre. The Centre has been established to bring together teams of researchers and clinicians to defeat childhood cancer.

Cancer immunotherapy is the most exciting and promising cancer treatment developed since the discovery of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, decades ago. As such, the Telethon Kids Cancer Centre is building and expanding our Paediatric Cancer Immunotherapy Program. Our goal is to bring the immunotherapy revolution to childhood cancer to improve survival rates, longevity, and quality of life for children and young people with cancer. Vital to the success of this initiative is high quality bioinformatic analysis, and as such we are seeking an expert in the field to drive this aspect of our work.

We are looking to appoint someone full time for 2 years, with a likely extension to 3 years. The salary offered will be dependent on experience and will be between $85,000 to $95,000 plus 9.5% super.

The Position

We are looking for a talented researcher to join our core Immunotherapy Program team to work across all Cancer Centre teams. The successful candidate will be independent, highly motivated, and have a desire to conduct high-quality computational research in paediatric oncology. We are looking for a highly collaborative candidate with a demonstrated passion for teamwork to complement our existing collaborative team. The role will be based at Telethon Kids Institute, Perth Children's Hospital, Nedlands, Western Australia.

The successful candidate will apply machine learning approaches to discover how to optimise immunotherapy for cancer using bulk transcriptome, epigenome, and a variety of novel single cell based assays.

The position represents an exciting opportunity to work at the cross-roads of basic discovery and clinical research and offers the successful candidate the opportunity to develop their data analysis skills.

Your Experience

You will be an experienced bioinformatician who is used to working on collaborative research projects with a relevant publication track record. The key to your success will be your demonstrated experience in the following:

  • A PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or a related quantitative field. Alternatively, equivalent experience in a research setting may be suitable.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex genomics datasets including creating new analysis workflows in R or Python.
  • Experience in high performance computing with experience in C or C++ is beneficial.
  • Proficiency with Linux/Unix.
  • Excellent data management skills, including experience in using reproducible research frameworks. Previous experience in analysing cancer datasets is highly desirable.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior team members (desirable).
