Senior Governance Adviser, Clinical Trials And Cohort Studies

Clinical trials are a growth area for the University and health service partners. Along with that growth, it is recognised that there are opportunities to improve governance, operational and educational activities which will put Deakin University and affiliated partners at the leading edge of investigator-initiated and industry supported trials in Australia.

This role will be responsible for the provision of University-wide advice, integrity and services to ensure the Deakin University community is aware of their obligations to meet clinical trials ethics and compliance obligations, as well as develop policies and processes on clinical trials governance and management of clinical research data.

To thrive in the role you will have strong interpersonal skills with significant experience in implementing human research ethics principles and Good Clinical Research Practice Guidelines. Your excellent organisational and time management skills coupled with your ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team environment will set you up for success.

Your key responsibilities are to (but are not limited to):

  • Ensure that the University is compliant with its obligations under the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulations, the Privacy and Data Protection Act (2014) and other related legislation
  • Provide expert policy and governance advice to the Pro Vice-Chancellor Researcher Development through the Manager, Research Integrity related to clinical trials and cohort studies.
  • Establish a clinical trials and cohort studies governance committee
  • Support development of partnerships with external clinical trial collaborators
  • Develop a streamlined governance framework for the conduct of clinical trials and research data management
  • Interpret legislation and guidelines relevant to the conduct of clinical trials and provide high level advice to the University Faculties, Institutes and Strategic Research Centres, staff within the human research ethics office and the Deakin University Human Research Ethics Committee
  • Liaise with the Research Integrity Governance Officer and the Senior Human Research Ethics Adviser and provide high level advice regarding clinical trial and cohort studies and research data management compliance
  • Liaise with the University’s Information and Records Service, the library, the eResearch Manager and the Senior Human Research Ethics Adviser to provide a comprehensive research data management toolkit for researchers
  • Support the development of education and training materials regarding clinical trials and research data management requirements to facilitate the compliance of researchers within University

To be successful, you’ll have

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience or a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with research governance and an understanding of human research ethics principles and Good Clinical Research Practice Guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare policy and research documents, grants, business cases and submissions to Government.
  • Significant experience in the development and delivery of workshops and research training
  • Experience of university systems, committee and board structures, and decision making processes
  • Experience in practical laboratory, human ethics and research governance systems and processes
  • Experience of dealing with external regulatory bodies (e.g. Australian Standards, OGTR, Department of Agriculture)
