The UTS Research Office is recruiting for a Research Translation Manager to lead a team that identifies, supports and develops research translation opportunities, including commercialisation and associated intellectual property (IP) management and advice, for research-generated IP across the whole university. The role aligns with the UTS Research Strategy as set out by the DVC Research and contributes to its implementation and realisation.

If successful in applying for this role, you will:

  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Research Translation team and be accountable for their performance
  • Assist with setting the strategic priorities for IP protection and research translation
  • Maintain and improve internal processes for efficient and effective recording, assessment, protection, advice and translation of research-generated IP
  • Manage and report on the Research Translation Project Portfolio, including monitoring UTS IP disclosures, patents & patent applications, implementation of translation plans and strategic alignment
  • Review strategic marketing and technical material, such as descriptions of UTS inventions, for presentations to a range of stakeholders
  • Develop and deliver internal training programs, workshops and seminars for staff and research students on IP, commercialisation and research translation
  • Report on UTS translational, impact & engagement and commercialisation activities

With examples, please outline in a separate document how you meet the following six (6) key selection criteria points below:

  • Negotiation, influencing and interpersonal skills, including relationship management and business development skills at the highest levels, preferably demonstrated in a technology transfer or commercialisation situation
  • Understanding and expertise in:

o intellectual property including management, patenting, licencing and contract research agreements
o spin-out company conception, funding and establishment
o market analysis, market research, competitor analysis and positioning
o the Australian higher education, R&D and innovation ecosystems and relevant benchmarks in other jurisdictions

  • Excellent comprehension, verbal and written communication skills including the ability to write technical and business documents concisely and persuasively
  • Experience managing staff, directly and indirectly, empowering project teams and holding them accountable
  • Experience in change management
  • Persistence, resilience and strong problem solving skills, working well under pressure with concurrent deadlines

Remuneration

Base Salary Range: $120,584 to $126,325 pa (HEW 9)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a continuing basis
