Student Affairs Division

The Student Affairs Division falls within the DVC-A portfolio, which brings together central units that provide operational, corporate, and pastoral support for all aspects of the student lifecycle. The Division is a key driver in enhancing the UQ student experience, and retention, success, and employability. It has two operational arms: the Student Services Directorate, and the UQ Student Employability Centre.

The objective of the Student Services Directorate is to provide a range of services and support functions that enhance the student experience and assist in ensuring student success.

The current initiatives run by Student Services fall into a number of areas:

  • Advice Teams | The focus is on enabling student success through providing general and specialist support including accommodation, disability and inclusion, general welfare and international student advice.
  • Learning Development Team | The focus is on supporting student success through online, group and one to one initiatives to enhance academic and learning skills for students.
  • Counselling Team | The focus is on providing an opportunity for enrolled students to access professional counselling so that they may better develop and fulfil their personal, academic and professional potential.
  • Student Experience Teams | The focus is on delivering projects that help students make connections and partnerships that enhance their experience at UQ. The work of this team will provide opportunities for students to build a sense of belonging and support within UQ.

About This Opportunity

As the Student Counsellor, you will play an integral role in providing mental health and general counselling interventions for enrolled students in addition to running workshops, groups and other education programs. Your role will also include the development of online educational materials, and prevention and intervention activities which are primarily related to mental health and wellbeing. In support of members within the UQ community who have experienced sexual assault or sexual harassment, the scope of your role will also contribute to the work of the Sexual Misconduct Support Unit.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

As the Student Counsellor you should possess demonstrated effectiveness in the delivery of evidence based counselling and therapy at both the individual and group level in addition to experience in both specialist and generalist counselling. A degree in psychology, behavioural science or counselling and at least 4 years subsequent experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training is essential to the role in addition to the following skills and attributes:

  • demonstrable knowledge of issues relating to equity, diversity and equal opportunity as it relates to the Higher Education sector
  • a strong desire to work collaboratively and in partnership with colleagues and students to deliver one on one counselling for students and support programs that enhance the student experience for all students at UQ
  • demonstrated ability to deliver and design group presentations related to student development, mental health and wellbeing
  • familiarity in interacting with diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • a commitment to the Code of Ethics of the Australian Psychological Society, Australian Association of Social Workers or a similar professional body

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW Level 7.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $88,763 - $ $96,783, plus up to 17% super. The total FTE package will be in the range $103,852 - $113,236.
