• Reports directly to the Professor Mark Sanderson, ECP Director, Info & Systems (Engineering, Enabling Capability Platforms)
• Remuneration at Academic Level B ($98,569 - $116,965) + 17% superannuation

The School's PhD students and faculty conduct world class research in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Search and Recommendation, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Distributed Computing and Cybersecurity. Our goal is consolidating our digital innovation capabilities and expertise into one School positions us to respond to strategic industry and economic opportunities aligned to digital technology and transformations. The School will fast-track digital innovation across all College programs and elevate our external position as a leader in technology and digital innovation. The School's leadership is tasked with the significant responsibility of building the architecture and capability to position RMIT with a supercomputer capacity and a world class digital leading lab which will support interdisciplinary activities as they transition into augmented reality.

About ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) is a new, cross-disciplinary, $32 million national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. Funded by the Australian Research Council from 2020 to 2026, ADM+S is hosted at RMIT in Melbourne, with nodes in seven other Australian universities. The Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research, and civil society network. Its priority domains for public engagement are news and media, transport, social services, and health.

About You & The Role

Perform competitive research and development activities relevant to the Centre with multidisciplinary researchers leading to high quality refereed journals, reports and/or books;

Contribute and generate new and high-quality research outcomes that are advantageous to the scientific advancement for this project through presenting ideas and research findings at seminars, conferences, and industry meetings, as well as engagement with external stakeholders;

Actively participate in various research initiatives and strategies relevant to the ARC Centre’s research culture, which includes participation in research collaboration and community-building within the Centre’s research programs and focus areas;

Prepare & produce competitive research grant proposals, applications and generating funding through strong linkage and effective liaison with industry and government;

Plan and manage managing research projects timelines ensuring research conducted conform to the University and ARC requirements with respect to research ethics, integrity and data management as well as conducting research in accordance to healthy and safety policies & work practices.

You Will Have

Solid theoretical and sound working knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

Machine learning and deep learning;

Time-series and spatio-temporal data mining.

Proven research experience in:

Performing machine learning experiments and establishing ML/DL pipeline using multiple large-scale datasets and public benchmarks;

Maintaining and contributing to public codebase or repository;

Generating new contributions for the Machine Learning community.

Evidence of excellent track record in research and scientific investigations including publications in high quality Q1 peer reviewed journals and conference contributions as ranked by CORE in AI, machine learning, and data mining, such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AAAI, KDD, WWW, WSDM, and other related top A* conferences;

Strong interest in the technical and societal problems related to the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics (FATE) in AI, particularly in problems related to explainability and fairness;

Highly developed problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to communicate and present research findings, concepts, and knowledge in dealing with ambiguity;

Ability to manage and plan your time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research independently and collaboratively, work effectively to meet project outcomes and milestones as well as maintaining a high-achieving research culture;

Good interpersonal and strong communication skills (both verbal and written) appropriate for interacting with research students, staff, and external stakeholders, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD qualified in the field Computer Science and Information Technology relevant discipline area within the past 5 years at the time of appointment, not including periods of career interruption due to carer’s responsibilities, parental leave, illness, or disability.
